Vendor Questions

The Right Questions, Before You Hire

Take one of these lists to every vendor meeting. The answers separate the pros from the guessers.

Questions for Moving Companies

  • Are you licensed, insured, and registered with the federal motor carrier system if doing interstate moves?
  • How is the estimate structured: binding, non-binding, or not-to-exceed?
  • Do you handle packing, or just transport?
  • How far ahead do we need to book, especially for peak PCS season?
  • What is your claims process if something is damaged or lost?
  • Do you move the car, or do we need a separate auto transport?
  • Are there extra fees for stairs, long walks, or a shuttle?

Questions for Home Inspectors

  • Are you licensed and insured, and do you carry errors and omissions coverage?
  • How long after the inspection do we get the full report?
  • Do you inspect the roof, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing in the standard fee?
  • Are you licensed for the VA loan inspection process?
  • Do you do sewer line scopes or radon testing as add-ons?
  • Can you tell me which items are urgent versus nice-to-fix?

Questions for Lenders

  • Are you experienced with VA loans, including PCS buyers closing remotely?
  • What interest rate and APR are you quoting, and are there points?
  • What are the closing costs, and which can be covered by the seller?
  • How long is your typical pre-approval valid?
  • What underwriting conditions will I need to satisfy, and how fast?
  • Can I lock a rate, and for how long, given my PCS timeline?
  • If I am using a relocation package, how do the benefits interact with my loan file?

FAQs

About These Resources

Can I print these checklists?

Yes. Each checklist has a print button that prints that checklist on its own, or you can use your browser's print menu to save it as a PDF and keep it on your phone for the move.

What else does GG include in the free PCS relocation guide?

Beyond the checklists here, the free guide bundles the PCS timeline, neighborhood comparison worksheet, and the moving company, inspector, and lender question lists into one printable packet. Request it through the form on the homepage.

Are these lists advice or legal guidance?

They are practical planning tools, not legal, tax, or financial advice. Your lender, estate attorney, CPA, and moving company are the right sources for their specific areas, and I am happy to coordinate with all of them.
