Best Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails in Prince William County
Prince William County is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse dog-friendly trails in Northern Virginia — from the largest protected forest in the DC metro region to hidden state forests and scenic wetland boardwalks. Dogs must be on a 6-foot leash on all of these trails, so pack a good leash and plenty of water.
Prince William Forest Park

Prince William Forest Park is the largest protected natural area in the entire Washington, DC metro region — and it's an absolute treasure for dog owners in Northern Virginia. Over 37 miles of hiking trails wind through mature forests, alongside the peaceful Quantico Creek, and past historic CCC-era structures. The popular 11.1-mile Loop Trail offers a moderate full-day adventure, while shorter loops like the 1.3-mile South Valley Trail are perfect for an after-work walk. Dogs must be on a 6-foot leash at all times. Pets are not allowed in the Chopawamsic Backcountry Area or cabin camp areas, so plan your route accordingly.
Stop by the visitor center first for a trail map and to ask about trail conditions. Parking is $5 per vehicle. Weekday mornings are gloriously quiet.
Conway Robinson Memorial State Forest

Bull Run–Occoquan Trail (PWC Section)

Prince William Forest Park gets crowded on summer weekends. Arrive before 9 AM to secure parking and enjoy a peaceful hike before the midday heat and crowds. The park gates lock at sunset — don't get caught on the trail after dark.
Make a day of it in Historic Occoquan. Park once and spend the day exploring this charming riverside town — grab coffee, walk the boardwalk, and enjoy a dog-friendly patio lunch. Most patios are clustered within a few blocks of each other.
Check for special events at 2 Silos. The Farm Brew LIVE campus hosts seasonal festivals, live music, and farmers markets throughout the year — many of which are dog-friendly. Check their events calendar before you go.
Prince William County has three dedicated off-leash dog parks. In addition to Lucky's and Signal Hill (covered in our Manassas guide), K-9 Gunner Memorial Dog Park at 13000 Minnieville Rd in Woodbridge offers a fully fenced space with separate areas for large and small dogs.
Summer hiking requires real preparation. Temperatures in PWC regularly hit 90°F from June through September. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person (plus a collapsible bowl for your dog), take breaks in the shade, and know the signs of heat exhaustion in dogs.
Prince William County requires an annual dog license. All dogs over four months must be licensed annually. Licenses cost $10 for spayed/neutered dogs and $20 for intact dogs. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required.
