Spring Events

Pet Fiesta at Reston Town Center

Pet Fiesta is one of the largest dog-focused community events in Northern Virginia, drawing an estimated 10,000 visitors each year. Hosted by GoodDogz.org, a Reston-based nonprofit, this free outdoor festival fills Reston Town Center with animal rescue groups offering on-site adoptions, pet business demonstrations, a “Dog House of Style” fashion show with dog models, and kids’ activities like face painting. The event is completely free and open to the public — just bring your leashed pup and a love of all things canine.

Arrive early for the best parking at the Reston Town Center garage. The event is busiest between 11 AM and 2 PM.

Wags ‘N’ Whiskers

Wags ‘N’ Whiskers is a beloved Arlington community event held in the Shirlington neighborhood, home to one of the county’s most popular dog parks. Alexandria St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Fun Dog Show

One of the most charming pet events in the region, Alexandria’s Fun Dog Show takes over portions of Old Town during the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Super Pet Expo

After 25 years at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, the Super Pet Expo has found a new home in Manassas. This massive, three-day pet extravaganza features live animal acts, agility demonstrations, educational seminars, hundreds of pet-related vendors, and meet-and-greets with animal personalities. It’s part trade show, part festival — a must-visit for anyone who loves pets and wants to discover new products, food, toys, and services. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor areas, and the event regularly draws thousands of pet lovers from across the mid-Atlantic.

Tickets are cheaper online in advance. The outdoor vendor area is where dogs are most welcome — the indoor exhibition hall can be crowded.

National Dog Day Celebrations (August 26)

National Dog Day on August 26 is celebrated across Northern Virginia with special events at local pet businesses, dog parks, and community centers. Many dog-friendly breweries and restaurants host special menus, treat stations, and photo ops for dogs. Local pet stores often run promotions and host mini-events. While there isn’t one single flagship event, the collective celebration across the region makes it a fun day to explore dog-friendly spots.

EatLoco Farmers Market

One Loudoun, Ashburn (Loudoun County) Year-round, weekends (Saturdays and Sundays)

EatLoco is a year-round farmers market at One Loudoun in Ashburn that warmly welcomes leashed dogs. With over 100 vendors offering fresh produce, baked goods, artisan products, and prepared foods, it’s a great Saturday morning outing with your pup. Many vendors keep dog treats on hand, and the open-air, walkable layout makes it easy to browse with a four-legged companion.

Weekend mornings before 10 AM are the least crowded. Bring a portable water bowl — there are a few water stations but they can have lines.

Fall is arguably the best season for dog events in NOVA. The cooler weather makes it comfortable for dogs to spend hours outdoors, and the region goes all out with Halloween-themed celebrations, harvest festivals, and community gatherings. If you only attend one season of events, make it this one.

Howl-o-Ween at Dirt Farm Brewing

Dirt Farm Brewing in Purcellville hosts one of the most unique dog-friendly events in Loudoun County each fall: a Howl-o-Ween costume contest and market. The event pairs local animal rescue organizations with pet-friendly shopping from vendors like Pet Supplies Plus of Purcellville, all set against the brewery’s stunning Blue Ridge Mountain backdrop. Dogs in costume compete for prizes, and the brewery’s outdoor spaces offer plenty of room for pups to mingle.

Dirt Farm is about an hour from the Beltway — make it a full day trip and explore the nearby wineries and breweries along the Loudoun wine trail.

Howl-o-Ween at Lake Anne Plaza

Lake Anne Plaza in Reston transforms into a Halloween wonderland each October for its Howl-o-Ween celebration. Dogs and their owners parade through the plaza in costume, trick-or-treat at participating shops and restaurants, and enjoy live entertainment. The waterfront setting of Lake Anne, with its artist studios and café-lined plaza, makes this one of the most atmospheric pet events in the region.

Lake Anne Plaza has limited parking — use the nearby Reston Association lots or walk from the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station.

Tips for Enjoying Dog Events

Check event dates early. Most annual events change dates each year. Follow event organizers and local pet pages on social media for the latest announcements — many events post updates 4–6 weeks in advance.

Prepare for the weather. Most events are outdoors. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water for yourself and your dog in summer. In fall and spring, a light jacket for both of you is smart.

Bring essentials for your dog. A leash (required at virtually all events), waste bags, a portable water bowl, and a small mat or blanket for your dog to rest on are must-haves. Some events provide water stations, but don’t count on it.

Arrive early, especially for popular events. Pet Fiesta and McLean Pet Fest draw thousands of visitors. Arriving in the first hour means less crowding, easier parking, and a calmer experience for your dog.

Know your dog’s comfort level. Crowded, noisy events aren’t for every dog. If your pup is reactive or anxious around large groups, look for smaller, less crowded events or visit during off-peak hours.
